Mufflers and exhausts go hand in hand. Together, they make your car run. Without either, your ride is useless. What exactly do these unsung auto parts do? Here's our Salem, OR Capitol Cadillac of Salem team's basic rundown.

Keeping Rides Quiet

We've all heard the extremely loud rumble of some vehicle tearing through traffic. The cause might be a bad muffler. Aptly named, the muffler dampens sound waves from engine activity. It does this by channeling gasses and sound waves through a series of interior holes or tubes. The holes and tubes change the acoustics of the engine's sound waves, minimizing its roar and rumble.

Keeping Rides Safe

The main job of the exhaust is to capture, convert and expel fumes resulting from engine combustion. It begins in the exhaust manifold, which collects gases from engine combustion chamber cylinders. Later, a catalytic converter changes the gases into carbon dioxide and water vapor. The gases exit your car via the tailpipe, keeping cabin air breathable and environmental emissions to a minimum.
